Get the perfect balance of light and privacy with plantation shutters.
Plantation shutters are a kind of window treatment with adjustable louvers or slats that can be tilted to control the room's light and privacy. They are typically made from wood, vinyl, or composite materials and are manufactured to be installed inside a window frame.
The name "plantation shutters" comes from their origins in the American South, where they were commonly used on large plantations to keep out the heat and sunlight while still allowing for ventilation. Today, plantation shutters are popular for homeowners looking for a stylish and functional window treatment that adds beauty, value excellent to their homes at great prices.
The timeless beauty of plantation shutters complements any decor. Each panel of plantation shutters can be moved separately to control the amount of light entering a room. In addition to keeping out heat and cold, window shutters are useful year-round.
LET'S GET STARTED
At SYD Blinds & Shutters, we have a plantation shutter design for every taste and window frame, from the ultra-modern to the classically elegant. We stock six different sizes of louvers and various decorative frames, and special configurations for arches, French doors, patio doors, and specialty windows.
These hardwood shutters are made from real wood with a dovetail joint for maximum strength and durability without sacrificing any of the shutters' natural beauty.
Hybrid shutters are an attractive alternative to traditional hardwood shutters due to their cost-effective combination of modern materials and wood construction.
Polysatin™ shutters are made of a synthetic material resistant to moisture, heat, and UV rays. They are the perfect choice for high-moisture areas and are incredibly durable. Polysatin shutters are available in various styles and colors.
PVC plantation shutters are made from a synthetic polymer material called polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These shutters are designed to resemble traditional wooden plantation shutters but are made from a more durable and affordable material.
Vinyl plantation shutters are a budget-friendly option resistant to moisture and humidity, making them ideal for high-moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. They are available in various colors and can be customized to fit any window size or shape.
Composite shutters are made from various materials, including MDF, PVC, and wood. They offer the look of real wood but are more affordable and durable. They are ideal for high-traffic areas and are resistant to moisture, heat, and humidity.
Aluminum plantation shutters offer a contemporary, sleek look and are ideal for commercial settings. They are durable, lightweight, and can be customized to fit any window size or shape.
Although the steps for installing plantation shutters may appear simple (and we have provided easy-to-follow instructions below), achieving a smooth, uniform installation across all windows can be challenging.
If your measurements are off by even a few millimeters, unsightly gaps can result, making you regret not hiring an expert. Precise measurements are crucial; you may require a professional or assistant to install heavier shutters. Fortunately, many DIY kits come with frames that are easy to assemble.
Pro tip: If your window is not rectangular or square, you'll likely need custom-made shutters. And if you opt for custom shutters, it's best to seek professional help, as getting the measurements right can be tricky even under normal circumstances.

LET'S GET STARTED
For your convenience, we have divided the installation of plantation shutters into a series of straightforward steps for DIY installation.
While there may be some minor differences depending on your specific type of shutters, the modifications you may need to make to the plantation shutters will be minimal.
These steps are suitable for interior and exterior plantation shutters, but are primarily intended for internal shutters. We assume you have received your high-quality window coverings with the correct measurements.
Choose the style
Choose the style of plantation shutters you want to install because of their quality, style and great prices. We offer top quality products without making a dent on your wallet.
Plantation shutters exhibit superior quality, and they can seamlessly blend into your homes, and they’re something you’ll enjoy for upcoming years.
Choose color & type
We offer a ton of different choices on our website. Our customers mostly choose Faux Wood Shutters and Painted Wood Shutters.
You can choose the color and type according to your home's interior decor. Looking at them, no one can guess they aren't made from real wood. Once you've decided on the style of shutters, we can help you further customize them in various ways.
Measure your windows
Getting shutters that are the right size for your window is the most crucial part of installing plantation shutters in DIY installation. Getting precise measurements is essential for a shutter frame.
Inside-mount shutters require three height measurements: one on the recessed area's right, center, and left side (between the window trim). You can measure these three points from the exterior of the window trim (where it meets the wall) for outside mount shutters.
Then, take measurements of the width at the bottom, the middle, and the top. Once more, the distance between the inside and outside window trims will determine whether the shutters will be mounted inside or outside the window.
Buy plantation shutters in a standard size or hire professional from SYD blinds and shutters to fit your window exactly using the smallest of the three length and width measurements.
Choosing Plantation Shutter Features
Louver
Once you've decided on a style and material for your shutters, you can choose the size and material of the louvres (or slats). In order to accommodate a 3-inch pane, your window will need to be at least 2 3/4 inches deep, while a 4-inch pane will require a depth of at least 3 1/4 inches. Solid wood louvers are thicker if you want to upgrade and provide more stability AND excellent insulation.
Shutter Panels
The panel layout that comes next is a matter of taste. Choose the 1 left, 1 right option on the left-hand side of the window for smaller windows. We offer A 2 L x 2 R configuration option for larger window. Magnets secure frame and the panels in place, making this configuration extremely stable.
When deciding, consider the space in front of the window; if there isn't much room, you should go with four shutter panels instead of two for a larger window.
Shutter Frame sides
You may go with the 4-sided, 3-sided or 2-sided shutter frame for a secure shutter panel. If your window has a crank or other obstruction at the bottom, you may want to choose three-sided blinds, while cafe-style windows may only work with two-sided blinds.
Inside vs. outside shutter frame
You can't choose a frame without knowing what kind of windows you have. The L frame is the best option if you want to reuse an existing window opening (this is what we chose).
Choose the Trim Z Frame if you don't already have a window frame; it will cut down on the amount of light coming in around the corners and give your frameless windows the appearance of being framed. You can't go wrong with a designer frame for exterior mounting.
Dividing Roll
If your window is particularly large, or you simply prefer to only let in partial light at a time, a dividing rail is a useful addition to your shutters or venetian blinds.
Hinge screws Colour
Hinge colour options are also available... The "paint to match" option is ideal for hidden, seamless hinges.
Unpack and set installation hardware
Plantation shutters purchased from us will arrive safely packaged. Please specify which room you want each set of shutters for when placing your order, as we will affix a label to each shutter panel.
Each set of blinds also comes with all of the necessary hardware attached (hinge pins, hinge screws, pre drilled holes and screw caps) . Make sure to remove it first and set it aside!
So, the process for installing plantation shutters may sound complicated, but it really isn't. Simply put some screws into the wall, and you're done!
Assemble the Shutter Frame
Most of the smaller sets of frame shutters you ordered will be pre-assembled. You can skip this step if the outside frame of your plantation shutter is already attached to the shutter panels.
If you bought a plantation shutter separately from the frame (which should be a lengthier package), you'd need to put the frame together and then attaching the shutter to the hinges. Spread out your frame parts on a level area and pop the pieces into each other.
Two screw holes will be found at the top of the frame, and two will be found at the bottom after everything is in place. Use the smaller screws from your hardware kit in these four holes for the best results.
Stand the frame up and pre-drill screws
After ensuring the "top" label is at the top" and the "left" label is on the left, you can stand the frame up. Before installing the frame in the window, you should also go ahead and screw it into the pre-drilled holes.
In the four holes on the frame's left and right sides, use the longer screws included in the hardware pack. Put them in just far enough to keep the frame in place while you install the window.
Secure frame to the window
After that, you need only screw the longer screws into your existing window frame. Place the front of the shutter frame flush with the front of the window frame.
Again, use the hole you drilled as a guide to ensure a straight installation of these. It's not a big deal if they don't go in perfectly straight.
Your shutter panels will conceal them for the most part. However, this method guarantees that your shutters will fit snugly within their current frame.
Attach shutter panels
The panels for larger windows are sold separately from the frame. Doing so is essential at this time. To remove the hinge pins, simply pop off the plastic end cap, pull out the pin from each panel (there should be three per panel), and set them aside.
Align the hinges, then secure the panels shut with the help of the magnets. Make sure they stay together by reinserting the pin. Simple as pie.
Install the button catch
Button catches should be installed on the window frame's ledge, about 6 mm from the stile. Screwing the catch into the framework is the final step.
Install the strike plate and button
Close the panel when you've got the striker where you want it. So that you can verify its proper placement, please do as I have shown. Dot the appropriate spot on the panel with a pencil. When you have the right placement, install the button about 6mm away from the stile.
